BROOKFIELD PLACE

BROOKFIELD PLACE

Located below the famous Allen Lambert Galleria, which was designed in the early 90s by the Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava, the Brookfield Place Food Court is one of the busiest along Toronto’s Downtown Underground Pedestrian Walkway network (PATH). Its renovation takes cues from the airy, awe-inspiring and naturally lit galleria above to enhanced end-user experience and tenant visibility.

A key challenge was to keep existing marble columns, granite floors and ceilings while modernizing the design of the food court. The analysis of user habits and circulation patterns supports the creation of a contemporary food court experience, extending the programmatic possibilities of the space by inviting visitors to use the space for informal meetings, social gatherings and community events.

Two diagonal axes provide shortcuts to the busy commuters while faceted counters and variety of seating options offer comfortable eating spaces. Anchored by three supplementary areas – a community corner, a stepped seating island and a bistro, the project modernizes an iconic space in the city while maintaining the classic image associated with the Brookfield Place office complex.
